The Maasai Mara National Reserve is located above 1,500 meters where the climate is damper than other regions. It is not a national park and protected as a reserve and not managed by Kenya Wildlife Service. But, the local authorities like District Councils maintain the reserve. The money got from the reserve is used in the development of the local Maasai community. Two councils namely the Trans Mara and Narok council are part of the community. The Narok council manages the rest of the reserve on the eastern side of the Mara River, and the Trans Mara council manages the western part of the Maasai Mara National Reserve called as Mara Triangle.

For example, the termite mounds and the incessant groups of birdlife here provide one with an idea of the entire area while walking. This is different from the vehicle safari, and one only gets excited about feeling the natural bush and the greens under the feet. The Maasai Warrior Guides throw light on the wildlife habitat and make it a knowledgeable experience for the visitor. This is one experience that tourists would never forget in their lifetime.

The night safari can certainly give you a very different experience when comparing to the day Safari. It is a common fact that majority of the predators such as the big cats, jackals, lions, and hyenas do their hunting during the night or early morning. So you will have the best chance to see these kinds of nocturnal animals during your night safari expeditions once you are decided to take the course through the thick savannah of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
People and Culture
The people in the Maasai Mara Reserve are called Maasai and their community name is christened for the reserve. They are found here all over the place. Their children usually tend to the huge herds of goats, sheep and cattle and the others are busy in their everyday village life. This provides a very popular element in the safari tours here. The entire village experience is really worth for the trip giving a new dimension for the tour.
Maasai Mara National Reserve is popular for its lions, hyenas, cheetahs and leopards that are found all over the park. The place is thus a hub of easy prey and also is a favorite of the predators. The rare black rhino, for example, is often visible here along with the scrub, elephants, and the hippos. The elephants come in large herds here and spend time eating the greens here. It is believed that a grown elephant needs around 250 kg of vegetable food a day. The Hippo pools here also add to the overall wildlife experience. So the population of crocodiles, hippos, and the absolutely exciting varied bird life is a pleasurable experience for all who come here.
It will be wonderful visuals to watch the Great Migration, where a large number of animals like zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle migrate from Serengeti plains to Maasai Mara, repeating every year. This migration is the most attractive phenomenon happens every year in Maasai Mara. The migration season starts during July, and the migrated animals will stay there until October. In between some of the herds will return to Seregeti when the plain savannah is abuzz with fresh grass. The reason behind the migration is in search of fresh grass, their food. And the herds will stay there as long as they have enough grass to gulp. Albeit, this could be the fact it is estimated that only half of the total herds are seen moving to Maasai Mara in search of grass. It is indeed one of the splendid experiences one can have at Maasai Mara.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is famous for the Big Five. The big five means the leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo and the elephant. The black rhino is a common personality in the Mara and it was almost getting depleted in the early part of the eighties, however, it is still there and the number is low, though. When one comes to the Mara one may not get to see it, and those who do see it are lucky enough.
From Nairobi, the Maasai Mara National Reserve is about 260 kilometers away, and you can cover the distance in five to six hours time. Even if you are driving from Lake Nakuru, it will take 5 to 6 hours to reach to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.
Lodges and camps
Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya can offer all kinds of accommodations, from 5 star luxurious lodges and tented camps to more primitive and humble camping facilities. You do not have to stay within the reserve premises, the animals do not know where the border lines are anyway, and the lodges outside the reserve premises can offer night safaris, which are not allowed within the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
One can spend two to six days in the Maasai Mara Reserve Conservancy. There are special four-night packages too however it is best to stay for this duration in two different locations. One would then get a chance to see a better choice of animals. It is always prudent to have a reference point from where the safari would begin.
