Lake Nakuru National Park

In the Great Rift Valley is where we find the famous soda lake, Lake Nakuru. Only a 188 km2 this park offers a fantastic and famous birdlife, where two million of the small and large flamingo in periods colors the lake in pink. Pelicans are also to be found in large numbers where they prosper in the area where fresh water flows from the small streams. The park was originally opened to protect the large number of flamingoes that each year in periods is found on the shore of the lake in 1961. Later the park was expanded to include a piece of the savanna. Nakuru is one of the few parks that have fences all the way around the park. This made it obvious for a rhino preservation facility, to protect the rhinos from poachers. The park is also used for leopards that have been in touch with humans.

Wildlife:

The park is not only home to flamingoes and pelicans, the park now also offer an amazing wildlife of white and black rhinos, leopards, lions, buffalos, and the rare Rothschild giraffe.

Travel:

Lake Nakuru is only a few hours drive from Nairobi towards Uganda.

25 minutes drive from Lake Nakuru is the small soda lake, Lake Elementaita. Also here is a rich birdlife, the safari experiences are less. There are good riding opportunities in the area around the lake. Between Nairobi and Nakuru you find one of the other large and known lakes, Lake Naivasha, a fresh water lake. The fish in the lake is food for an infinite number of birds. Herons, Eagles, Pelicans are amongst the birds found at Lake Naivasha. The lakes many hippos there at night often are found grassing in front of the lodges is another attraction for the visitors. During the day on sail trip on the lake you can experience the hippos. In the east end of the lake you find Crescent Island, a small island that offers the opportunity to trek amongst giraffe’s, zebra’s, and antelope’s. North from Nakuru you find the fresh water lake Baringo, and the soda lake Bogoria. These lakes are outside normal tourist routes, but due offer a fantastic and impressive experiences.

Lodges and camps:

The park has two luxurious lodges, Sarova Lion Hill Lodge and Nakuru Lodge. Sarova Lion Hill Lodge has a magnificent view over the lake. Nakuru Lodge lies in the southern part of the park. There are also two primitive tent camps where the visitors have to do everything themselves. There is also a small hotel right outside the park, Stem Hotel.
