Glossary

Bird walk – On food with a local nature guide scouting for birds.

Boma – An outdoor eating area surrounded by tree poles or a wall of thick straw or stone.

Bush – Wilderness / Nature.

Bush BBQ – An arranged wilderness launch.

Bush Breakfast – Breakfast in the wilderness.

Camp – Camping in a tent while traveling. Usually at camping places that have limited facilities. You have to do most of the work or all the work while staying in a camp.

Game Cruise – Safari in open boats.

Game Drive – Safari in open vehicles, either jeeps or mini-van’s where the roof top can be opened so that you can stand up rights. Often takes place in the morning or in the afternoon. In some places it is possible to go on a night/evening game drive.

Game Reserve – Protected park with wildlife.

Game Viewing – Experience/Watch the wildlife.

Game Walk / Walking Safari / Bush Walk – A safari on food in the company with a local nature guide, usually in the middle of the day where the animals are less active.

Manyatta – Village in Swahili.

Mokoro – A hollow tree trunk that functions as a canoe.

National Parks and wildlife reserve – In east Africa that are two kinds of wildlife areas, National Parks or Game Reserves. The National Parks are assigned to the state with the purpose to protect the landscape and the plant- and wildlife. Game reserves are to protect the area from being too utilized by the local tribes. The locals get dispension to let their caddle use the area. As an example the Masai people use the Masai Mare for their caddle.

Safari – In Swahili this means “To Travel” and today covers the way we travel to experience wildlife in Africa.

Safari Lodge – Lodge is a hotel in the preserves. Usually build from natural materials and falls nicely into the landscape. Each room has their own bath and toilet and often a porch. The lodges have usually beautiful gardens and pools. A lodge is the prefered accomondation with luxuries buffιes and relaxations.

Sundowner – A drink that is peacefully enjoyed at sunset.

The Big Five – Lion, Buffalo, Rhino, Leopard, and Elephant, known as the big five from the old days, named by the hunters because they where most dangerous and hardest to kill.

Tented Camp – Is inbetween Mobile Camps and a lodge. These tenst are as big as a hut and has a private bath and toilet. All tents has electricity.
